Closed Rhinoplasty Dallas
You may have heard about the closed rhinoplasty technique, which Dallas, Texas, rhinoplasty specialist and board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Byrd offers as an option for nose surgery. But not all patients are ideal candidates.
Closed rhinoplasty is also known as an endonasal rhinoplasty. This nose surgery technique is "closed" in the sense that the nose does not need to be opened using an external incision in order to access internal structures. Internal cartilage and bone is accessed through only the nostrils using internal or intranasal incisions.
Benefits of Closed Rhinoplasty
These incisions fail to give the same level of visual exposure to the tip of the nose as an open rhinoplasty provides. As a result, the closed technique for rhinoplasty has limited use, and is not right for most of Dr. Byrd’s nose surgery patients. However, because there is less disturbance to the tip with the closed approach, patients who have essentially “normal” nasal tips can benefit from this procedure.
Candidates for Closed Rhinoplasty
The ideal patient would have a well-shaped tip and symmetrical structures with overall good support. A small hump on the bridge may be the main concern. During a rhinoplasty involving the closed approach, a small hump on the bridge can be corrected but the other characteristics of the nose should already be close to ideal. Closed rhinoplasty cannot be used to address a nose that is too long or crooked.
